The Moon Waxes and Wanes

Work Title: “The Moon Waxes and Wanes”
Creation time: 2021
Work Category: Installation Art
Work size: 5*0.2m
Work materials: Moonlight lamp, facial tracking sensor
Creation Description: The inspiration for “The Moon Waxes and Wanes” comes from the Fengshui pool in a rural ancestral hall in Songyang, Zhejiang Province – a traditional wisdom that condenses the universe in a small space. The work transforms this concept into a dynamic light and shadow installation.
A light simulating the phases of the moon was suspended in the dark space. Its built-in face tracking technology enables the “moon” to move synchronously with the viewer’s movement, creating a unique interaction of “as I walk, the moon follows; as I stay, the moon waxes.” When a person stares still, the halo gradually fills up. Once you leave, the phases of the moon begin to wane.
The work interprets the ancient Eastern philosophy that “when the moon is full, it wanes; when things reach their extreme, they reverse.” It uses contemporary technological language. The viewer is both the driving force that triggers change and the subject of contemplation. Between movement and contemplation, they personally experience the eternal rhythm of the mutual transformation between “fullness” and “deficiency”.
