Creation Note: “I, We 2020” is a site-specific behavioral installation that emerged during the lockdown period of the Shanghai epidemic. It “migrates” a traffic light from a public street into a private residence and hangs it in front of a white wall at home, serving as a silent and absurd self-warning.
The work invites (virtual or a few on-site) viewers to interact with it – to touch, gaze at or breathe along with its rhythm. The lights cycle through red, yellow and green, casting their glow on the empty walls, as if counting down for a gathering that cannot take place. This strongly implies the social connections and flows that were forcibly interrupted that spring.
This work is a poetic excerpt and reconstruction of the outside world by an individual trapped in isolation. It condenses the collective predicament on a macro level into a tense ritual in a private space, documenting the loneliness of an individual in a special historical moment, the yearning for public life, and the persistent confrontation between internal order and external disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
